Jan-Jan the crying "macho dancer" kid

During the March 12, 2011 airing of TV5's Willieng Willie, 6-year old Jan-Jan appeared in  a segment and  girated like a  "macho dancer" while crying. And arguments ensued in cyberspace on the propriety of said act.

 "Umiiyak pa iyan", Willie decided to make fun of him for almost 10 minutes. "Ganyan ho talaga ang hirap ng buhay ng tao. Si Jan-Jan nagsasayaw bilang isang macho dancer, sa edad niyang iyan. Para sa kanyang pamilya." Willie hands over 10,000 pesos. Willie added, "Parang iyong pelikulang 'Burlesque Queen'... kahit masama ang loob ginagawa pa rin para sa pamilya " Then Willie laughs.
These were the words that again gave rise to criticisms on the manner how his show operates.

I am not a fan of his gameshow. I even oftentimes get irritated by the length of time it airs every day since i prefer to watch the series "Babaeng Hampaslupa " and "Nagbabagang Bulaklak."   His humor is next to empty slapstick that nearly crosses the borderline of a typical gay-hosted Filipino stand up comedy skit. His program uses real emotions and put moral to give it a holistic meaning to its viewers.

It is in  a facebook posting  that i saw this 6-year old child dancing like a go-go male dancer in the tune of Snoop Dogg. Many felt that Willie's comments  that as if the child does the dancing to earn a living for his family is dehumanizing. The DJ kept on repeating the song and due to the child’s innocence, he just kept on dancing not knowing that what he was doing was wrong.

It seems  that the child DOESN'T LIKE WHAT HE'S DOING or else he wouldn't be crying and looking distressed. It looks like the parents/family had explicitly conditioned him to just dance whenever he hears the music in order to receive money.Such a precocious, obedient child who is dependent on his parents to do the right thing for him, but are using him in exchange for money.

The ordinary pinoy viewer will always find amusement in these sorts of thingsThe video is a clear case of child exploitation. That Willie would exploit the poor for his TV show ratings is repulsive, but borderline acceptable for as long as he was dealing with adults who knew what was happening."Tears are Gold"  perhaps is the marketing tool utilized by these programs. They capitalize in the misery of others as they offer money to the desperately poor, in exchange for public humiliation.

But to exploit a poor young boy (clearly a minor) is UNACCEPTABLE. He has crossed the line. The kid was gyrating to movements "macho dancers" are known for..and all of this, while he was teary-eyed. It just didn't look good
Children  should not be used as instrument for enjoyment and to be laughed at. Legally, the show has to contend with Section 3 of R.A. 7610 or Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act." which defines  "Child abuse"  as the maltreatment, whether habitual or not, of the child which includes any of the following:

(1) Psychological and physical abuse, neglect, cruelty, sexual abuse and emotional maltreatment;

(2) Any act by deeds or words which debases, degrades or demeans the intrinsic worth and dignity of a child as a human being;

Journalist Benjamin Pimentel said in his column. "But Jan-Jan was clearly in torment. And even Revillame apparently picked up on it...Maybe because we know that when we let children be humiliated in front of millions of people, when we let them be subjected to that kind of torture, we somehow degrade our soul as a nation...We have a big problem if it’s OK for most people to let a big shot TV host treat a child like garbage."
On the other hand, Atty.Teddy Te of the UP College of Law said in his blog  "Yes, Revillame is accountable for the utter insensitivity he showed to the 6-year old kid but also to his viewing public whom he continually insults with every word out of his mouth.  But he is not the only one accountable.  The parents of these children, the producers, the advertisers and the networks are also.  Most importantly, so also the viewing public which does not switch channels or shut off the television."

Unfortunately, the Jan-Jan fever has a domino effect. A consequence is that some kids now mimic jan-jan's stint at Willing Willy..

 A facebook grouping has been formed calling themselves "Para kay Jan-jan (Shame on you Willie Revillame!)". They noted that  "Our goal is to stop the exploitation of children for the sake of entertainment.Jan-jan provided a face for countless children and poor people who are forced by necessity to submit themselves into humiliation in exchange for quick cash."

After he again became the subject of flack in cyberspace, Willie "reguested" Janjan, this time with the latter's  parents in defense of the show.

When a child starts to dance like a stripper while crying, do you let him continue to dance so you can pay him? Or you do stop the child from dancing that way & wipe his tears away!?

  1. someone should raise this up with DSWD, and the appropriate case should be filed with the courts and with MTRCB on this issue, so that Willie gets chastised... again...

  2. Am with you. Willie was insensitive and chose to capitalize on the fact that the boy was crying. If the boy was not crying, I don't think Willie would fuzz over it. But the tears clearly manifests a troubled emotion.

    Would Willie have his kids do the same ... to feed him.... if the tables were turned? It makes my hair stand.

    Poor judgement.
