September 22, 1892, Juan Luna killed his wife Paz and mother in law Juliana Gorricho Pardo de Tavera

DATELINE: On September 22, 1892, Juan Luna killed perhaps one of my ascendants, Juliana Gorricho Pardo de Tavera, the mother of Paz Pardo de Tavera (Juan Luna's wife) , Both of them were killed by Juan Luna due to extreme jealousy, a crime of passion they say. I am still doing my research that Gorricho perhaps is a variation of my surname Gorecho. Juliana gave the lamp to Jose Rizal where the paper of "Mi Ultimo Adios" was found.
Juliana Gorricho vda. de Pardo de Tavera (seated at the center with baby Andrés Luna y Pardo de Tavera) with María de la Paz Pardo de Tavera y Gorricho de Luna (standing 2nd from the right) and José Rizal (standing 2nd from the left)
Juan Luna  was a man of violent temper. He suspected his wife of infidelity, and when his wife and mother-in-law locked themselves in a room to escape his anger, he shot them both and killed them.

He was acquitted of his crime of passion, and the assassination of his brother contributed to his death by heart attack at the age of 42 in Hong Kong on his way to join the Revolution in 1899.

In a “crime of passion”, a person commits a crime against a spouse or loved one, or another person, because of anger or heartbreak. When a person becomes very jealous or disappointed, it can produce such strong emotions that he cannot think... rationally and may act on his impulses without thinking about the consequences.the Philippine justice system considers “having acted upon an impulse so powerful as naturally to have produced passion or obfuscation” a circumstance that mitigates criminal liability. Not only that, but Article 247 of the Revised Penal Code expressly provides that if a person catches his spouse in flagrante delicto with another person and kills one or both of them as a consequence, he shall only suffer the penalty of destierro, or exile, and this only to protect him from the vengeance of the relatives of his victims. This provision, which makes the Philippines one of the few jurisdictions which recognize the “crime of passion” defense, is a holdover from the old Spanish Penal Code, which was in force in the Philippines from 1886 to 1930, a revised form of which became the Revised Penal Code of the Philippines.

Ang Turkey ay Pabo Rin

Bigla ako naging fan ni Tuesday Vargas for her CineFilipino film "Ang Turkey ay Pabo Rin". Walang katapusang tawa. A timely story that addresses the touching and oft times hilarious journey oThis experimental comedy explores the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of a Filipino-American couple on a universal love trip - that which do not discriminate against color, stature, or culture. It is a celebration of the Filipino experience in a foreigner’s perspective, and alternatively, the realization of the American dream in a Filipino’s eyes.

Huling Chacha ni Anita

to the LGBT crowd, this is a must see Cinefilipino film. A 12-year old Anita falls in love with the new woman in town (Angel Aquino) ; years later, a girlhood crush blossoms during the Fiesta of Santa Clara in Obando, Bulacan.

2013 National Seafarers' Day

Seafarers nationwide are invited to participate in the nationwide activities for the 18th National Seafarer's Day.
Activities nationwide include the Memorial at Sea, High Mass, Grand Parade, Oratorical/ Art/ Photo Contest, Karaoke challenge, and the Search for Top Ten Outstanding Maritime Students. The Grand Parade from Rajah Sulayman park in Malate to Ninoy Aquino Stadium  will be  participated in by more than 4000 stakeholders from maritime schools, government agencies, manning agencies, training centers, maritime organizations, unions, families and private institutions.

The high mass will be celebrated by Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle while Vice-President Jejomar Binay will be the keynote speaker.

Former president Fidel V. Ramos earlier issued on July 9, 1996 Proclamation No. 828 declaring August 18 as National Seafarers' Day wherein  the Apostleship of the Sea (AOS) was tasked to coordinate with the public and private sector in   activities related to the celebration of said event. The purpose of the Proclamation is to give due recognition to the vital role of Filipino seafarers towards the development of the Philippines as a maritime countryLater,  Proclamation No.1094 was issued in 1997 by President Ramos   during the last Sunday of September every year. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) on the other hand, in its Circular No. 1884 dated July 11, 1996, requested all member nations to “celebrate’ World Maritime Day (WMD)during the last week of every September (maritime week) of each year. Consequently, Presidential Proclamation No. 866 dated Sept. 6, 1996 declared Sept. 27, 1996 and the last Friday of September every year, as National Maritime Day (NMD) spearheaded alternatively by the government agencies , to wit Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), and  Philippine Ports Authority (PPA).

The Philippines is considered as the major supplier of maritime labor globally. Per Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) data,. Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) data showed that the deployed Filipino seafarers in 2006 (274,497), 2007 (266,553), 2008 (261,614), 2009 (330,424), 2010 (347,150), and 2011 (400,000) brought in the dollar remittances that have also been constantly increasing from US$1.9B in 2006, US$2.2B in 2007 , US$3B in 2008, US$3.4B in 2009, US$3.8B in 2010 to S$4.3B in 2011. As of 2013, the seabased sector’s remittance comprise at least 22% of the total dollar remittances of OFWs. No specific reason can be identified in the increase in dollar remittance despite the drop of supply globally in 2007 and 2008. But perhaps it is a result of increase in the salaries of the seafarers, on one hand, or the more aggressive “remittance” attitude of the Filipino seafarers, on the other hand. On the other hand, the Philippines as a flag State has a registered fleet comprising around 1.4% of total world tonnage.

Given the vast Philippine coast line (twice the size of the United States and nearly three times more than China), Filipinos have natural maritime instincts that place them at an advantage over other nationalities. Foreign shipowners are known to prefer Filipino seafarers for equally important qualities: dedication and discipline, industry, flexibility, loyalty, English language fluency, adaptability, positive work attitude, law-abiding, and problem-solving capability.

Ironically, the Philippines almost lost its slot on the historical first thirty ratifying countries of the Maritime Labour Convention of 2006 (MLC2006 It took the philippines six years to ratify MLC2006 on August 13, 2012 after it became a signatory of the so called international magna carta for seafarers rights..The convention sets out minimum standards and fair working conditions for seafarers worldwide. Philippines is the thirtieth country to ratify MLC 2006 out of the 314 signatories and one of the of the first thirty ratifying countries required for the convention to take effect.

Lauriana

LAURIANA is an EVIL film.. and i LOVE IT!!!You wanna kill Allen Dizon for his portrayal of the violent military lover in this Sineng Pambansa entry. This is the story of a woman who falls in love but the relationship rapidly descends into a dysfunctional one, with her at the receiving end of repeated physical violence. However, it is also a coming-of-age tale with regards to Carding, a ten-year-old orphan who finds himself somehow entangled in the abusive affair.a blogger said it showed the reality of an “art form” and the existence of evil ‘in contrast’ with the beautiful landscapes, perfect scenery, innocent souls and a pure heart (of a beautiful woman named Lauriana).Disregard the fairy tales and “happy endings”- great injustice done to a woman and a violence that could harm and disturb your intellects.

The movie is set in Quezon during the 1950s. Bangs Garcia plays the title character, Lauriana, a dancer in a barrio "baylehan" (dance floor in an open space). Allen Dizon plays Capt. Samuel Corazon of the Philippine Constabulary. He is assigned to a small barrio in order to catch suspected members of the Hukbalahap guerrilla group and falls wildly in love with Lauriana. Adrian Cabido plays the orphan Carding, who is an important character in the lovers’ lives.

Sineng Pambansa NFF 2013 "All-Masters Edition"

The country’s most accomplished film directors - with respective bodies of work that have spanned decades to substantially form part of Philippine cinema heritage - join forces for Sineng Pambansa National Film Festival 2013, presented by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) in cooperation with SM Cinemas. The All-masters film festival is set to be screened at all SM Cinemas from the 11th to the 17th of September.
Each director used respective provinces as the backdrop for their films, highlighting the beautiful vistas as well as real urban settings to be found around the country, as each teem with life and come with stories to tell.
Dubbed the All-Masters Edition, this year’s Sineng Pambansa festival, presents the following list of films:

“Otso”

The rebellious Twinkle Marie’s life is about to get turned on its head due to a visit from an, unbeknownst to her, biological father with secrets to share.             This is a coming of age story about Emmanuel A. Lacaba, the brilliant young poet who dared to dream through his words and joined the armed struggle of 1975, cementing him not only as just poet but also a patriotic warrior.

“Badil”
Director: Chito S. Roño
Synopsis:
Acting as a window into how flawed our basic political right has become, the film follows Nonoy as he takes over his Father, the Kapitan’s, duties as guardian to committed voters harassed by vote buyers on the eve of the election.

“Lihis”
Director: Joel Lamangan
Synopsis:
Set in the 70’s during the darkest hours of Philippine History, we follow the story of two young NPA warriors who find themselves entangled in a web of frustration, despair and victory as they fight not only for democracy but also their love for each other.
“Ano Ang Kulay ng mga Nakalimutang Pangarap”
Director: Jose Javier Reyes
Synopsis:
Concerned with themes of loyalty, old age, mortality and memories, the film traces the life of Teresa, a nanny who has dedicated sixty years of service to a middle class family at the expense of her own happiness and fulfillment. Though upon the death of the family patriarch, Teresa’s fate is now up in the air as the family decides what sort of future is to come.

OTSO

Directed by: Elwood Perez
Starring: Anita Linda, Vangie Labalan, Vincent Tañada
Synopsis: Hoping to reconnect with his roots in the city of his birth, Lex returns to Manila. He writes a screenplay for an indie film based on his neighbors in a flat he moves into and what he believes is going on behind their closed doors…but are they really the people he thinks they are?
He realizes that his perceptions are in conflict with the objective facts. Is it even possible to create a work of fiction that is true to the facts when the very act of writing entails reimagining those facts? In the process, he discovers that his illusions of filmmaking, romance and the city itself are at odds with the truth
