Superman: Red Son

Dapat nung Cold War Era, dinaan na lang sa movies.. sino mas sikat, si superman USA or si superman russia? Superman: Red Son was released in 2003 by DC Comics with the premise "what if Superman had been raised in the Soviet Union?" Superman's rocket ship lands on a Ukrainian collective farm rather than in Kansas, an implied reason being a small time difference (a handful of hours) from the original timeline, meaning Earth's rotation placed Ukraine in the ship's path instead of Kansas. Instead of fighting for "...truth, justice, and the American Way", Superman is described in Soviet radio broadcasts "...as the Champion of the common worker who fights a never-ending battle for Stalin, socialism, and the international expansion of the Warsaw Pact."http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman:_Red_Son

Rizal and the three naked men of Samar

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOSE RIZAL . Dateline: June 19, 1861. José Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda was born. He was a Filipino polymath, patriot and the most prominent advocate for reform in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era. An interesting photo is this statue in catbalogan, samar of Rizal's bust with his two novels carried by three naked men(similar to the oblation) made by a UP Fine Arts grad Miguel Alcazar. His wife explained: "The three naked men are carrying the books and the bust—it simply shows that ours is a continuing burden to reform the social system, to pave the way for a better life for Filipinos. Naked in the sense that we are all equal,"

FYI. The Oblation is based on the second stanza of Jose Rizal's Mi Ultimo Adios.

In fields of battle, deliriously fighting,
Others give you their lives, without doubt, without regret;
Where there’s cypress, laurel or lily,
On a plank or open field, in combat or cruel martyrdom,
If the home or country asks, it's all the same--it matters not.

Juan Luna's The Parisian Life

Oil on Canvas, 1892. Juan Luna's The Parisian Life. The image of the French courtesan when reversed has a "geographical likeness" to the mirror-image of the archipelago of the Philippines or it shows the map of the Philippines. The woman has a dark neck and was placed with her head in a window joint resulting to having the effect of a sort of "antenna jutting out" of the head. The dark neck and the window joint line showed that as if the woman was being strangled, conveying the message that the Philippines was under stress.

The Parisian Life is regarded as the last major work Luna did during his post-academic and life in Paris This period in Luna’s career in painting is known as the post-academic or the Parisian period, a time when his style moved away from having “dark colors of the academic palette” and became “increasingly lighter in color and mood”.

A blogger wrote :  " everything else in the painting  was pointing towards the lady—the attention of two of the three men , the triangulation of the newspaper, the orientation  of the table and chairs, and the brim of the top hat and the corner of a man’s overcoat lying beside the lady. Luna was actually drawing attention to the lady—the motherland—and was quietly asserting the need to acknowledge that its relationship with Spain—its lover, its colonizer—had a degree of abuse and malicious intent, as suggested by the half-drunk mug of beer on the lady’s side of the table and the still-full mug on the lover’s side of the table. Even the newspaper behind the lady’s head, with its name translated into The Cry of Bastille, the French Revolution of a century before, points toward the planning of the Philippines Revolution"

Philippine Flag as body paint

Happy Independence Day.. “…the cover was to pay homage to the colors of the nation in an original, clever and modern way… we hope to pique the interest of a new generation and raise the question of what it means to e a Filipino in this day and age.” – Rogue Magazine.

Some of the Prohibited acts according to SECTION 34 of Republic Act 8491 (Flag Code of 1998 ) are (a) To wear the flag in whole or in part as a costume or uniform; (b) To print, paint or attach representation of the flag on handkerchiefs, napkins, cushions, and other articles of merchandise;i(c) To use, display or be part of any advertisement or infomercial. Unless said law is repealed or amended,  the above photo is a  violation of the law. The National Historical Institute reminds us that the use the Philippine flag as props or costume is an incorrect way of expressing nationalism NHI said that It is disheartening to see flags desecrated and stripped off of their significance as our national emblem for nationalism and love of country. NHI said in its website ". It seems that today’s generation no longer looks up to the flag with reverence and nationalist fervor, and oftentimes, they take for granted the meaning of our national flag, which is sovereignty and unity. "

"The making of the Philippine Flag by National Artist Fernando Amorsolo. The flag that we have today was actually an original design by the first President of the First Philippine Republic, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo y Famy. The general subsequently tasked Marcela Marino de Agoncillo (regarded as the Mother of the Philippine Flag) to sew the first flag for the new republic, with the help of Marcela’s daughter Lorenza and Delfina Herbosa de Natividad.

Kahit Konting Pagtingin

Sharon: "Ang problema sa 'yo maaga kang ipinanganak"
FPJ: "Ang problema naman sa 'yo huli kang ipinanganak"
– Sharon Cuneta and Fernando Poe Jr., Kahit Konting Pagtingin (1990)

The King of Philippine Movie teams up with the Megastar in this enchanting romantic comedy with huge doses of action. This is the first time that FPJ and Sharon Cuneta worked together, and the result was a box-office hit which broke all existing records. Likewise, movie fans were greatly pleased with the love story of the driver-bodyguard, Delfin and the headstrong, Georgia whom he was able to tame. Would they end up together? Maybe not because as they themselves said, they were born to different times....
